Word 2000 saving error

I have several pc saving to a 2000 Server giving the following message when trying to save word documents. “Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error (network path)”. All users have full rights (at present) and there is adequate disk space available. Documents initially gave problems to open, had to be open from dropdown history list, sometimes when opened seemed to open in read only mode.
