Word 2002 changes characters to symbols

Workstation running winxp sp1 (fully updated) and Office XP (fully updated) in a win2k domain. While the user types in a document, Word spontaneously starts changing text to symbols, basically making it gibberish. Tried doing a repair, didn’t help. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling, no help. Word also sometimes changes layout (paragraphs, bullets)for no apparent reason. Has anyone else run across this?

Close all open instances of MS Word. Search for and delete the normal.dot file; it has gotten corrupted. Word will recreate a new normal.dot when you next open it.

i guess the user has made some changes to the MS office programs in general. Open word and click on the format menu –> FONTS in the dialogue box you have default click it so that things will be bck to normal. Well another way to check it is when you type something see what is the font name select all that you have typed and change the font to timesroman/ariel see if the characters are readable.
