Word 2002 problem

I was working on a document when a glitch happened and some of the text got converted to boxes, wing dings, etc (through??? M ? ? ? ). This only happens when I have a word document open on the network. It does not happen in anyother program or nor if I am working on a word document on my hard drive. I would appreciate any help I can get.
