word 2003 application

my office 2003 works fine but word produces a squares in the whole document whenever i open a word document

... unprintable characters.

Usually we see those characters when we open a Word document with another program like NotePad. The program isn't capable of displaying the hidden formatting characters embedded into the document.

If you're seeing the squares when opening a Word document with Word itself, I would check your language settings. Obviously, something isn't set right.

(edit: does anyone else see the < character where the D belongs at the beginning of the word document above? TR glitches!)

I've seen where a perfectly good Word document, that opens fine on another computer, shows up as something similar to what you're seeing. Try changing the view and then saving it under a different name. If that works, delete the original and rename the second to the original.
