In Word 2003 and earlier, when you selected a block of text and clicked italic, it made the whole block of text italic, or if it wasn’t sure which way you wanted to go, it would make it all roman, then all italic when you clicked a second time. I used that function all the time.
In Word 2007, however, the functionality has changed in a most unhelpful way: now, clicking the italic button simply *reverses* all pre-existing italic formatting within the selection, making italic words roman and roman words italic; clicking a second time simply toggles back to the initial state, with further clicks simply repeating the alternation. At no point does one get the option to simply make the *whole* selection italic (or roman). This new functionality is something I simply *never* need, whereas the lost functionality is one I need all the time. Does anyone know how to make the formatting buttons work the way they used to in Word 2003 and earlier?
