Word 97 Lines Blacking Out

When editing a previosly created document in Word 97, some lines will randomly blackout or be replaced by a black bar. When I scroll down and then back to the current insertion point, the line will reappear as it should be. This problem only happensin documents that were previously created, closed and then opened again. Any suggestions?
