Word Attachment Won't Open In Outlook 2k

By fitgirl ·
I have a workstation (P3 933, 256mb, 20gb)which opens four (4) windows, one at a a time, before opening only MS Word documents that is attached to an email (Outlook 2000). This is more of an inconvenience than anything else because the document eventually opens. However, the user happens to be a VP in my organization, so I need to get rid of it.

Here are the windows the user sees when he tries to double click on a MS Word attachment:

Window 1
Microsoft Word (Window Title)
C:\Program Files\pathname is not accessable. The file was moved or removed. (The user can click on OK only)

Window 2
(No Title)
The drive or network connection that the shortcut "Filename.ink" refers to is not available. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, then try again.

Window 3 (Same as Window 1)

Window 4 (Same as Window 2)

It obviously cannot find the file in the users temp drive for the attachment. This happens for MS Word only, not excel or Powerpoint, etc...

Any suggestions???

Either the attachment has a macro embedded in it which is trying to open something (like a presentation located in C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio DV\Programs, or your user's normal.dot file has had something added to it which is attempting to set up something on his toolbar.

Some programs attempt to add themselves to the Word toolbar in order to "help" you. Visio does this, for example. If you subsequently remove Visio, Word then gives you error messages every time you open it.

First, check the attachment. Save it to disk. Set your copy of Word to enable the macro warning, then open the file and see if the warning comes up.

Second, look at the user's copy of Word when it is open. Look for toolbar items that have been added. Lookfor macros in normal.dot. Look for items in the Word startup folder (which may be at c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup).

If the user forwards the email with attachment to you, do you get the same problems opening it? (If so, it is something in the document.)

If you make a simple word file "hello world" and attach it to a message to this user, does the user have the problem when opening it? (If so, definately his system.)

Good luck.

There was some executable in c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup. When I deleted it, everything worked just fine.

Thanks!!!

Is this a windows 2000 computer or windows nt workstation? If yes, then get rid of the "lnk" at the end of the link. For some reason WinNT and 2000 have problems linking to files with the lnk ; win9x does not.
