Word Attchmnt blank opened from email

Hi,
When I recieve an email Word attachment and open it there is nothing there. It opens blank. Excel will open Word will not. I am not sure what version the person who sent it to me has. I created a new email on my computer, never sent it and added an attachment went to open the attachment and it was blank.
