Word causes system to freeze

By goldfinger00752 ·
Using Word in Office XP. When program opens the system freezes. Checking Task Manager I find that 100% of the resources are being used. Any fix would be appreciated

Have you downloaded the Office Service Packs?

How much memory is in the system? I've had documents with large page counts and or embedded graphics lock XP up.

A common cause of this issue is corruption of the normal template.

To resolve, locate all copies of and delete them. When you next start word it will re-create the template from scratch.

Hopefully this should fix your problem :-)

Are you on a network? I have experienced a similar problem when opening up word because for some reason, if there are dns issues, word will take a long time to open. I believe its because it is trying to connect to mapped drives, but it having problems finding the server.
Adding a host file entry for your file and print server will usually resolve the problem.

I uninstalled Office XP Pro, then installed Office 2000 and now Word works fine and the system does not lockup.
