    word stops responding temporarily

    Locked

    by jaypea5000 ·

p4 gateway win xp system using office 2003 small biz edition. problem: word will stop responding temporarily. won’t do it all the time, but it does happen 5 or 6 times a day.

examples: if I’m typing, it’ll stop for a minute or so, then catch up to where I am. if I’m closing or saving a doc-network or local-it will hang for a minute or so, then complete.

    any ideas?

When Word freezes, can you still access the Task Manager? If you look at the Processes and click on the CPU header, you can see what process is using up CPU time and perhaps get a clue as to what is causing the freeze. Possibly scheduled tasks, virusscans, virus sending emails out, etc. Hope this helps.

You might have a virus. Many of the newer ones hog your CPU cycles, either to simply degrade your peformance and make you angry at the people who sold you such easily-invaded software, or to use your computer as a surrogate website for distributing porn, launching a massive denial-of-service attack, etc. It would probably affect more than just MS Word, but you never know. Be sure you have the latest update of your virus definitions and re-run your virus scan. If you were one of the first people to catch a new virus, your virus definitions wouldn’t have recognized it yet.
