Word Template issue – Table of Contents

I created a template (.dot) document in Word97. In this template, I created a Table of Contents. If I double-click the [.dot] file while in Explorer, Word opens the document as a [.doc] file, but the Table of Contents does not update the page numbers. It shows page 2 for each entry, which is the page number of the TOC. If I open the document in Word 2000, it shows page 3. If I then update the fields, the correct page numbers appear. If I open the document in any other way, the document opens with the correct page numbers.
