Word97: Spontaneous character generated

I am sevicing a Toshiba Satellite laptop running WinME and Office97.
While typing in Word97 it will suddenly insert spaces, lines and the characters 1QA,1\qa and even continuous z’s, in random fashion. I have been unable to detect a virus or any other problems. Any suggestions?
