writing a script to ping Win NT machine

There is something about this in TechRepublic articles, just search for it... You will need the R.K. I have an utility that will send SMTP e-mail at http://www.croitoru.com. You can write the batch file and schedule-it to run every so often...
Alternatively, you should try What'sUp network monitoring software, it's great in doing all you asked for (including ringing you if a particular host OR service fails). It can also monitor NT services and will allow you to define the service and reaction mode (it can attempt to restart the service, reboot the computer or page/email/ring you).
http://www.ipswitch.com has the software.
I hope this helps,

Radu
