X windows for Redhat 6.2

By Vuitanh ·
I'm installing Redhat 6.2 with default option of Server only. Now I would like to install X windows, so I ran rpm -ihv Xfree86*rpm, but it ask for lib*.so. What is that .so extension and how do I install? Is there anothere way of installing X windows beside rpm method?

X needs some libc libraries in order to run. I'm pretty that the .so extension means that the file is a c object library. Run the command rpm -ivh libc5*rpm, and the proper libraries should be installed. The libc 5 package is also available at anysite where rh 6.X may be downloaded from. The file you need is at ftp://ftp.linuxberg.com/pub/distributions/RedHat/i386/RedHat/RPMS/ Down load libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm

X may be downloaded in .tgz format from www.xfree86.org, but you will probablyfind the rpm install easier to complete. The rpm version of X comes with a few utilities like Xonfigurator, and XF86Setup, that aren't available with the g'zipped version. These tools are very useful. They allow you to configure X with manually editing the XF86Config file.

I hope this helps
