My Compaq (Presario 12XL310) Laptop has a DVD drive. I have Redhat 7.3 installed on this laptop. I am trying to use Xine to playback my DVD's.

Xine opens fine, however when I select play in the program the following error message comes up:

-xine engine error-

There is no available input plugin available to handle "dvd:/VIDEO_TS.VOB".

What plugin does Xine need....Help!!!!!

I know there is something about the legality of playing DVD using open source programs. Is this what is kicking me in the butt, and if so is there any programs out there that does not have this issue of legality?

Well if you are in the US then no, you are stuck. The program used to read and play DVDs in Linux is called DeCSS it decrypts the DVD so it may be played on a unsupported DVD player. There are plugins available, but as I said before it's my believe that DeCSS is illegal in the US as of right now. If you are out of the US there are numerous legal plugins available, such as DVD decrypter, Smart Ripper which will decrypt the DVD so that a linux player may read and play it. DeCSS was originallywritten for Playback in Linux but because it allowed for copying hence pirating of DVDs its not looked upon as having the best intentions. I'm an avid linux user myself and I can't wait for a supported player to be released on the Linux platform.
