XP ACCESS – dates

in a data/time field setup for shortdate with an input mask – if I type 13/05/05 ACCESS returns 05/05/2013- obviously there is no 13th month – I thought that by using the Date/Time function – ACCESS would automatically verify for date accuracy – what do I need to do now, maybe write a validation rule (how/where (table/form etc)change my format, etc. so that an error msg will automatically pop up to notify the user that the date has been input wrong. This error also occurs in 97 and 2000. Any and all help is greatly appreciated by me and forever by my users. Thank you
