XP and Kazaa

By thorpe322 ·
How safe is running a file sharing program like Kazaa? Are there safety measures I could take in XP Pro to help secure things a bit more? Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I am aware of the "secret" bundled software that has been included with Kazaa. I have already uninstalled the software created by Brilliant Digital, per instructions on CNET. So i just have Kazaa loaded. My worry was the chance for people to find a "hole" in Kazaa's sharing ability to access other information on the PC. And if there was a way to tighten things down things with XP Pro. Thanks!

Install ZoneAlarm & when you start Kazaa you'll need to allow internet access & allow server for Kazaa. Once Kazaa has connected change the allow server to XX disallow server, it doesn't need to act as a server once connected thats only the Cydoor program uploading ads which you have to allow for Kazaa to work, but you only need to do it once. Now run a pop-up killer program. This should help to stop your average fool from causing you any problems, it won't stop a pro not much would.

To answer your question no filesharing program is safe, if you plan on downloading programs be aware a lot of them are loaded with viruses & trojans.

Thank you! I use Norton firewall rather than zonealarm, but I can restrict the server in the same manner. I had thought I was required to allow it to act as a server. Now I know better.
