XP booting issue

I run two machines with one monitor with a data transfer switch. XP on one machine and Linux on the other machine. Everything works OK except when I forget to switch my data transfer switch to the XP machine. If I try to boot the XP machine with the data switch to the other machine XP never boots again.

I can turn everything off, turn the data transfer switch to the XP machine, but XP starts to boot. The XP logo appears but the login window never appears and the monitor goes into standby.

Looks like XP will not boot with out a monitor. I have booted ME without a monitor many times.

How can I get XP to boot again short of doing a repair install?

Is this just on my system or does XP have to have a monitor to boot and why does it not boot anymore after I turn on a monitor?
