XP compatability mode.

Right click on the application, select properties, then Compatability Tab. You can try the options there.

I tried all the options and Talonsoft's West Front will not run.

I run Age2 on XP and have no problems, but, I had to uninstall it and reinstall it. I was running it on 98se, and had to reinstall when I upgraded to XP.

I can play but...

I have XP at home and I haven't had any problems playing Age of Empires II. But my XP is a full version. You may not have the proper driver for your video card. Try getting the latest driver for it. Check the hardware compatibility list at Microsoft's site to make sure your video card has been tested and aproved for use with WinXP.
Might want to check if there are any patches available for the game.
Also make sure you have the latest version of Direct X. Check the amount of memory and CPU usage of the game. If your hard drive is not large enough you may need to replace it to give some space for the system to move information from your hard drive to your processor and RAM.
Add more RAM.

you have Indeo video for XP

since win XP SP1 the driver for Indeo Video is missing. You need to purchase it in order to work for some old games that play with this kind of video.
I purchased it and two games started to work!
