XP Hangs after I install New Hard Drive

By shamika_johnson ·
My hard drive went bad so I installed a Maxtor Diamond Plus 8 ATA/ 133 40 GB hard drive and then installed XP Prof. All installations went well but during reboot XP hangs at the Logo. How can I fix this? The system is a Dell Dimension XPS R350 with 128 MB.

You have a near minimal hardware configuration for Win XP. However, it should install and run, albeit slowly. Windows 2000 pro, 98SE, or Me would be a better choice for your hardware.

Try booting into safe mode (press F8 key intermittently during bootup for startup options screen).

If PC boots into safe mode, you have a driver issue. Post results here and we can assist further.

If PC will not boot into safe mode, you need to re-install Windows.

The system will boot in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. The only problem I have is Normal Mode and that is when it hangs at the Logo.

Well your system specs are bare minimum. Add RAM, I am actually surprised ANY Xp box would ship with 128MB of RAM.

Secondly XP is VERY picky hardware wise, make sure your hardware is supported by checkin gthe Microsoft Windows XP HCL list:

Most likely sounds like a resource conflict between the Graphics card and new drive.

Try booting into safe mode and checking your hardware & drivers.

Check IDE jumper settings. If the new HD is off an existing IDE device on same channel then it should be set to Slave, if on its own Channel then set it to Master. I don`t use any other jumper settings.
