XP, Me & 98SE on N/W

By inquiringmind ·
Simple network. Cable modem, Belkin ROuter connected via ethernet cable to four PCs. Two XP laptops, one 98SE box with HP5P laserjet shared. One Win Me laptop with Canon i960 inkjet printer shared. One of two XP machines (Toshiba laptop) can't find the ME or 98SE boxes on Network. One XP machine (Viao laptop) has no problem--sees all three other PCs and prints fine to shared printers. The problem child (P.C.) Toshiba laptop has it's XP firewall turned off...have installed and re-installed all the protocols and windows networking clients, services, etc. All are on standard MSHOME workgroup.

The P.C. has no problem connecting to internet via ethernet cable. Browses fine, email server found with no problem. It can see the other XP box on the network...but can't find the 98SE and Me boxes or their printers...

I compared all settings on both XP laptops...why can't one function on the network. Doesn't play well with others...?

I'll take your questions on the air...thanks.

Do I need to do a TCP/IP stack reset?? One source suggested installing NetBeui files from the XP System CD as XP doesn't normally install these...Any suggestions??

XP machine that is having trouble enable guest account. Make sure you have no firewall like Norton\symantec's or zone alarm running on it. If you temporarily disable them by going to start and run type msconfig then go to the services tab and uncheck password validation, script blocking services, and anything that states nortons\symantec network hit apply restart the machine. Then run the wizard again. give it a few minutes then try again.

Are you using tcp/ip alone? Have you added ipx as well and tried again?

Thanks, but I tried ipx/spx. No netware clients or servers. Didn't help, either.

Checked IE ? Could someone have told IE they did not want ot go there ? Thus telling Exployer they did not want to go there ! (primary check box is to block) and Windows talks to other window components.
