XP only saving, not opening web download

When clicking on a download link (.doc) on a web site and the window asks whether I want to open or save, I click "open" it doesn?t open, it opens the window to save it. It used to do either open or save; it seems somehow a setting was modified (perhaps by a patch?) Where can I change the choice to offer both open and save? Thanks

maybe a internet explorer repair might help. start/control panel/add remove programs/internet explorer/repair

I am afraid I don't understand.
a *.doc promts a save box.

what happens with other applications ?
*.zip, *.exe . etc ?


is it only at 1 web site of all websites ?

possible soltution is to reinstall IE from control panel, add remove programs, or install IE 6 sp1.
