XP Pro printer IP port unable to print

By bshaw400 ·
So I have a Win2K3 environment with 30 or so workstations / laptops and 6 printers. Recently, one laptop had a strange printer problem. It was unable to print to a specific network printers; I was unable to get the IP port to talk to the printer and had a hard time deleting the port and recreating it. Eventually, I ran SFC /scannow after I found that the disk had some file crosslink problems and needed to be scanned. After the disk was scanned and SFC was run to restore some files, the machine appears to run fine. However, I still can't print correctly to a couple of network printer (named to BACK405 and JSMITH). However, I can print to the exact same brand of printer on another IP address using the same print drivers. So I did a little test and created a DOS lpt2 port and redirected to that through NETUSE and the printers' name (\\BACK405 and \\JSMITH). And lo and behold, I suddenly could print to them. Steps we took on the machine :
Repaired the Windows installation.
Updated the drivers.
Deleted and recreated the printers.
Checked the network configuration on laptop.
Checked other machines attached to network for correct printer connectivity.
Everything seems to check out ok.

But this specific machine's still unable to print to BACK405 or JSMITH printers if we use their IP addresses. Other machines can print to those IP ports just fine. Any ideas?
