XP Pro steup error (currupt shell32.dll)

    Locked

    by sosat ·

Hi, many thanks to anyone who can help me

I bought a used version of XP Pro from a neighbor who just fell in love with his new G4.

I’ve tried to do a clean install but during the copying of the files I get the error message that setup cannot copy the shell32.dll file, which in turn prevents the GUI portion from completion.

I’ve tried copying the file from the cd and extracting the file manually in W2k and Win98 and get an error message that the file is corrupt. Is there any way to get past this, get an uncorrupted file, or have I been taken?

I wouldn’t really think that there is such a thing as a used copy of an operating system. It is possible is the person you got the OS from has already installed and registered the copy then you will not be able to use it.

the setup is this clean, formatted, maybe a ntfs upgrade? is this copy a real deal? authentic? well activation is tricky and im sure microsoft doesn’t like “used”.consider the fact yes the whole computer system would be easier called used.unless thisis a real disk you should be able to extract the file.try a slow burn of the “used” disk using say “clone cd” the burn at say 4x-8x would see the file- and,and try again.

I have read somewhere that even if the former owner has registered the product he only has to transfer the registration to you through the manufacturer and then it is legally yours. So if this is the case get your friend to transfer the registrationand XP will then be able to help you I would think. Hope that helps in some way
