xp pro to xp home fun

from the XP home machine i can ping the xp pro machine. i cannot ping the home machine from the pro machine.

I want to connect to XP home via real VNC. I also want to copy files to a shared folder on xp home. I just cant seem to find this machine on my workgroup.

any ideas?

the fact that one is running pro and one home.

If I were to take a stab in the dark I'd say it has something to do with the configuration of the router. It's probably set to not route traffic between clients.

In my experience(s) home has been a pain in the @ss to get to function correctly on a network

I am sorry if I am misinterpreting what you are trying to convey but your quotes around "help" gave the impression of thanklessness and sarcasm.

As far as the differences between pro and home are concerned, I am aware of them and they still have nothing to do with your problem. You said you cannot even ping them; XP Home doesn't restrict basic ICMP packets.

Where are these private IP addresses getting assigned from? Do you have a 2k3, 2k8 or some linux box sitting around running DHCP services that you're not telling me about? Most commonly in home situations these services are provided by a consumer grade router/switch combo device, which I have also seen disallow traffic between clients by default.
