XP Proffessional Mouse not working, all drivers missing

Please help me. My mouse drivers are missing, it doesnt matter what mouse I use, even a generic ps/2 nothing works! I have looked everywhere and downloaded all drivers I could find, and nothing works. in the device manager the mouse is missing, no listing for mouse or pointing hardware. before I re-install XP, id there anything I can do? Thanks for any help!
