XP Recovery Console - cannot enter value to repair XP

By ha11134 ·
My Dell computer came with an installation CD for Windows XP. The computer cannot start Windows and after I read about the information, I try to boot the computer with the installation disc. From the information I got from DEll website, I have to press F10 several time when the setup starts Windows and I managed to get to the Recovery Console screen. But I cannot get the 1: C: windows XP selction by pressing 1 - it simply did not respond. Would you please let me know if there any way I can move forward?

It may not be on at that point. (Check your keyboard indicators.)

Try the arrow keys instead.

USB or PS/2 keyboard? (or is this a laptop)

by robo_dev In reply to Using the Num pad?

Obviously if the keyboard did not initialize, then providing input may be difficult.

You may need to plug in a PS/2 keyboard and/or do a bios reset if a USB keyboard is not working. Some bios settings will make usb keyboards act flaky.

Depending on your Dell a Repair Install

Following the directions listed under Method 2 here may be possible

But just as likely depending on how the Recovery Set was made it may not be possible to see the Second Repair Option. If that's the case you'll need to look at something like the Ultimate Boot CD to do some diagnostics and attempt repairs, it's a free package available here

Just make sure to download the ISO File and not to click on the add on the page.

As mentioned above if you are using a USB Keyboard you may need to change to a PS2 to repair or reinstall the OS here.
