XP sees but won't access drive

By RedHook ·
I can't believe I did this to myself. I moved all ny data to the second internal hard disk (NTFS created under Win2K) to allow a repartition and clean install of XP. XP could see the partition sizes but called them unformatted and wouldn't assign a drive letter. I reloaded Win2K, it sees the partitions, calls them healthy but won't open them calling them unformatted. Am I SOL or is there hope?

Not sure if XP has this capability or not (it should) but Win2k can import foreign disks using disk management through the Computer Management applet in Admin tools. I had reinstalled the OS in response to a broke hard drive and thought I was trulyhosed until Win2k imported my other disks.

Thanks Shuston. I don't see "import" from any menu or right click menu. I am currently on Win2K which is what the partitions were created under.

Just try to start XP in Safe mode and try to access. I had a similar problem like this and a BSOD was coming too. It was cured by the Safe mode.
Good Luck

And as long as your hard disk is spinning there is always hope to retrieve your data by other means if your OS doesnt allow you.eg:lost&found, easy recovery pro et al.

Thanks, I finally gave up and reformatted. I am looking at the utilities you suggested for future reference.
