One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried Piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieteddown. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’sneighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds ofdirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

User: My building is on fire!!!
Me (Support): Have you called the fire department?
User: No, my manager said that anytime we have a problem we’re supposed to call computer support.
Me: Ok, call your fire department.
      ——————————————-
User: I’m want to unplug my computer and plug it in elsewhere
Me: Ok, unplug it and move it where you want it.
User: That’s what I’m trying to do.
.. .. .. after a while of working with the user it was apparent I neededto go in person. I ended up having to do this for them… (i.e. let’s leave them some dignity here)..
      ——————————————-
      (on the VMS platform)
user: I have these three arrows on my screen
      me: Someone halted your system
user: can’t be – there’s no one in the computer room except my 2 year old. I left him in there alone.
me: he’s the one who halted your system.

I use a cable modem for Internet access from home. Recently, it went down.

      Call first number.
Get auto-message: they have new numbers.
      Call second number.
      Yes, [1] in English.
Let’s see, I want [5] All other support issues.

Yes, I *would*visit the online help facility if I could get online to do so.
      Different voice says same thing.

      Ah, some decent music.
(20-30 seconds pass.) Grrrrrrr, yes, I know about the online help.
Repeat for twenty minutes or more.

Tier 1 support person finally answers.
We chat. Frequently, they say “give me just a second to pull that up” – which could last 20-30 seconds.

Aha, the problem isn’t with my network interface card, it’s with the cable.

The earliest appointment I can get is ten days from now… I think “Grrrrrr”, I say “fine”.

      {Any other cable modem ISPs in my area? Of course not…}

1- Get a call from the client (Must note that the IT person is on vacation). They aren’t receiving email, and their clients can’t access thier web site.
I arrive onsite to find the server had been unplugged.

2- Get a all from an NT Admin. Was trying to join some new computer to the domain, but couldnt. Now users were unable to use email and printers.
      – After about 15 minutes on the phone discovered the admin had unplugged the server from the switch to make room for the new computers. DOOH!

3- Arrived onsite one time to take out a floppy disk so the PC would boot. User- “Oh I thought you meant the CD drive when you asked if I had left a disk in the drive.”

Those are probably the three stand outs I remember.

I’m game, let’s try this one (I’m not making this up):

Older lady comes to my retail tech service dept. with a fairly new PC she’s purchased. She says she’s tried to install an internal PCI modem, and has gone through 3 already, all turned out to be bad, didn’t work at all, she says. Would I remove the last modem she tried out of her PC and put in another one? OK, sure.

When I take it to my bench, take off the case cover, here’s what I see: A PCI modem attached to an open case slot perfectly. Problem is, the nearest PCI slot and edge of the motherboard is about 3 inches away. The card is hanging in midair. I’ve heard of wireless, but slotless!!?? Good thing I was out of sight of the customer, or it would have been ROFL in front of her, God and everybody.

Working on the help desk for a company on a WAN, I deal with employees all across the country. The person who normally would change tapes on their local server was out of the office so another person was taking care of it. That’s when they called me. They couldn’t figure out what tape to put in. I connected over the WAN, looked up what tape they needed and read off the number. I then had to explain that they first had to eject the tape that was in the drive. Suddenly, my connection to their server froze. I commented to them that I had lost my connection to their server and they said “Oh, I just turned it off.”

“WHAT?!” was all I could come up with.

“The tape wasn’t ejecting so I turned off the server.”

I wasn’t even going to attempt to find the logic in that statement, but I got her to turn the server on, eject the old tape, insert the correct tape, and tell the other 50 people at their location that they had to reboot and that they may have lost everthing since they last saved any documents. I figured that would be the best way to teach this person what NOT to do.

You are put on hold by someone who ought to help you,

and five minutes later, you heard some sound like the phone key being pressed, and again, and again .. (apparently somebody on the otherside want to make an outside call and without no luck as you are hanging on the phone) …. and then …

tuuuuuuuttttttt … damn, they just hang the phone.

My best one. My boss (network supervisor) was talking to his boss (network manager). My bosses computer would not boot. He tried 6 times. His boss, standing there, said it’s only 3 months old, get it replaced under warranty. From accross the room I could see what was wrong. I walkes over and sure enough, saw the keyboard error. With a sweeping motion, I picked up the keyboard and said “hocus, pocus, now WORK computer”! I turned it off and back on and walked accross the room to my desk. They stared at the PC as it came back on with no problems and then at me and said what did you do? Since I did report to these people I was forced to tell them what I did. When I looked at the PC, I could see that my boss had a book laying on the keyboard, pressing down the Esc key. When it tried to boot it got the keyboard error. It was no big deal, BUT THESE TOADS RAN THE NETWORK DEPARTMENT! Can you figure what kind of disaster we had.

This guy calls us (got one of my co-workers VME) and leaves a message complaining about a problem with a notebook (which was not purchasedfrom us, nor did we make it) screaming, yelling, ranting, raving etc calling us “The most dumbest, most stupidest mother******’* on the planet”

Nothing on this subject is complete without all the equipment brought to us after being smashed to bits for repair…

for some reason it won’t work, can you fix it?

A scanner gun ran over by a fork lift
A keyboard after a large amount of ink covered it in black goo.
A UPS that was emitting a chemical odor
they paged me because they needed me
      to unplug it.
A wireless antenna bent in a violent storm
      (some reason it doesn’t work).
Anywhere they’ve lost power -I’m not sure
why, but does it really need power to
run? Can’t you fix it? …

My FAVORITE story!! – a construction worker
decides to drill a hole into the ceiling – he didn’t know where he was drilling – he just pointed – and knocked out the entire network – since he happened to drill right into the router cabinet knocking out the power.

there’s worse stories – but those people died so let’s not make this too bad..

It’s not a Held Desk story. It’s about a friend and his mother.

She (the mother) has just got a scanner so she hsa decided to start using the computer. So she sit down at the computer, but nothing happens. The mouse does nothing, the keyboard does nothing, the moniter does nothing. So she calls my friend who is in the next room. He shouts back, “You’ve got to turn it on!” She answers, “How?” He walked in and turned it on.

Another story not from a Held Desk. This one is from a Green House.

Receptionist: Hello how can I help you?
Elderly Lady: Well I have lived in an appartment my whole life so I’ve never had much of a green thumb, but I just moved into a house and I wanted to get one of those big tall things with the green leaves.
      R: You mean a tree?
      EL: Yeah that’s it!

These are both true stories! I mean it!
