    Which version of Linux do you recommend for someone that is just starting out wants familiarity?

      Fedora or Ubuntu

      The two are very good distros and would make you make you comfortable with Linux. Fedora and Ubuntu come with GUI and command line and are well built for new comers.

      I would recommend Ubuntu Mate LTS. The Mate Panel looks a lot like the Windows Taskbar and can be customized to look even more like it. The auto update and upgrade will certainly help a newbie. It is still the traditional desktop. The software center gives you a descriptions of software and makes it easy to install. I would still add Synaptic to their installation though.

      I would think Ubuntu Mate would give a first time Linux user a familiar look and easy way to maintain their new system. The LTS would give them a few years before having to deal with a new installation.
