The best smart home security camera is not necessarily the one with the highest resolution. Video quality, power source, detection accuracy, storage, subscription costs, and how well the camera fits your existing smart-home ecosystem all affect the decision.
The eufyCam S4 is our best overall pick because it combines a 4K fixed camera with motorized tracking, solar charging, and local recording without requiring a monthly subscription. Nest has the strongest AI features, Arlo stands out for notifications and flexible battery installation, and Ring makes the most sense for homes already invested in its security ecosystem.

How we compared
We focused on the factors that make the biggest difference once a security camera is installed:
- Video quality: resolution, field of view, HDR, zoom, and independent day and night testing.
- Detection: person, vehicle, animal, facial, and other smart-alert capabilities.
- Storage: local recording, cloud history, and what remains available without a subscription.
- Power and installation: battery, solar, plug-in, wired, or PoE requirements.
- Smart-home support: how well each camera fits its wider ecosystem and app.
- Price and long-term cost: current hardware pricing plus the subscriptions needed to unlock major features.
Official manufacturer pages were used for current models, specifications, prices, and subscription terms. Independent testing was used for image quality, alerts, tracking, and app experience.
1. eufyCam S4: Best overall
The eufyCam S4 takes a different approach from a conventional fixed outdoor camera. Its upper 4K lens maintains a 130-degree overview while a lower dual-lens 2K PTZ camera can pan through 360 degrees, track subjects, and zoom in as they move.
That combination reduces one of the weaknesses of pan-and-tilt cameras: turning toward one subject can normally leave another area unwatched. The S4 keeps the fixed wide-angle view while the lower camera follows activity.
Power comes from a rechargeable 10,000-mAh battery and a detachable 5.5W solar panel. Eufy says an hour of direct sunlight per day can keep the camera operating under typical conditions, although actual charging depends on placement, weather, and activity.
The camera also works without a HomeBase. It has 32GB of built-in storage and supports expansion through microSD, while buyers who want a multi-camera system can add HomeBase S380 for centralized storage and additional features.
WIRED found the S4’s fixed 4K footage crisp and clear, praised its tracking, and reported that the included solar panel kept its test unit charged. The publication also noted that local recording works without forcing buyers into a subscription.
That local-first design gives Eufy an advantage for buyers concerned about recurring fees. Eufy says video remains stored locally unless the owner chooses optional cloud backup.
Choose the eufyCam S4 if: You want detailed outdoor coverage, automated tracking, solar charging, and local storage without a required monthly fee.
2. Google Nest Cam Outdoor: Best AI features
The Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) records up to 2K HDR at 30 fps with a 152-degree diagonal field of view and 6x digital zoom.
It is wired rather than battery-powered, so installation requires running its weatherproof cable to an outlet. The upside is continuous power and support for 24/7 recording when paired with Google’s highest subscription tier.
Without a subscription, Google includes up to six hours of event video previews with clips up to 10 seconds. Google Home Premium Standard expands that to 30 days of event video history, while Advanced provides 60 days plus up to 10 days of continuous 24/7 history.
Advanced also adds the features that make the Nest camera unusually smart: descriptive notifications, natural-language searches through camera history, event descriptions, and daily summaries. TechRepublic has also covered Google’s expansion of Google Home into third-party AI agent access, another sign of how broad that ecosystem is becoming.
In WIRED’s hands-on review, the new outdoor Nest camera delivered crisp video day and night, fast alerts, and accurate detection of people, animals, and vehicles. The reviewer found Google’s advanced AI useful but not flawless and considered the subscription expensive.
There is no expandable local-storage option, so buyers who want recordings kept primarily inside the home should look at Eufy or an Arlo setup with a compatible SmartHub instead.
Choose the Nest Cam Outdoor if: You want Google’s strongest camera AI and already use Google Home enough to justify its subscription.
3. Arlo Pro 6: Best notifications
The Arlo Pro 6 combines 2K HDR video with a wide 160-degree field of view, rechargeable battery power, an integrated spotlight, color night vision, two-way audio, and a built-in siren.
Unlike Ring and Nest’s wired picks here, the Pro 6 can be mounted without running power to the camera. Its battery is removable, and Arlo also supports an optional solar charger.
Live streaming and basic motion alerts work without a paid plan. A current Arlo Smart Aware subscription adds 60-day cloud video history and AI features including person, animal, vehicle, and package detection, event captions, video search, and custom detections.
Arlo changed its subscription names in September 2026, so older references to Secure Plus and Secure Premium are no longer current. Smart Aware Single now covers one camera, while Smart Aware covers unlimited cameras at one location.
Expert Reviews praised the Pro 6’s 160-degree view and adaptable AI detection but found the subscription and optional local-storage hardware expensive. WIRED’s broader testing similarly found Arlo’s alerts swift and accurate with relatively few false positives.
Local storage is possible through a compatible Arlo SmartHub, but the camera does not include one. That makes Eufy simpler for buyers whose main goal is avoiding cloud storage and recurring fees.
Choose the Arlo Pro 6 if: You want flexible battery installation and particularly strong alerts, and you are comfortable paying for Arlo’s cloud features.
4. Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Pro: Best for Ring homes
The Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Pro records 4K video with up to 10x enhanced zoom, a 140-degree horizontal and 85-degree vertical field of view, and 3D Motion Detection.
The $199.99 model compared here is the Plug-In version, which uses an outdoor/indoor USB-C power adapter. Ring also sells Wired and Power over Ethernet versions, but those configurations cost more.
TechRadar’s testing found image quality to be the camera’s strongest feature, particularly the detail available from 4K footage and zoom. The trade-offs were its high overall cost and reliance on paid Ring services for many recording and AI features.
Ring Solo adds cloud recording for one device, including up to 180 days of video playback and person, package, and vehicle alerts. Ring Multi extends those features to all devices at one location, while Ring Pro adds intelligent features including Video Descriptions and Familiar Faces.
Ring has also changed how it protects cloud footage. Its newer TAKE encryption system limits how long Ring retains copies of video encryption keys while allowing supported cloud AI features to continue operating.
Privacy-sensitive buyers should still decide whether cloud-based AI features are worth enabling. TechRepublic has previously examined the privacy questions around Ring’s facial recognition capabilities, which can identify familiar visitors in supported regions.
Choose the Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Pro if: You already use Ring devices and want a high-resolution outdoor camera inside the same app and security ecosystem.
What do security camera subscriptions cost over five years?
Subscriptions can cost as much as, or considerably more than, the camera itself over a long ownership period.
Ring’s current annual pricing works out to about $249.95 over five years for Solo, $499.95 for Multi, or $999.95 for Pro, assuming prices stay unchanged.
Google Home Premium costs $500 over five years for Standard at the annual rate or $1,000 for Advanced.
Arlo Smart Aware Single costs $479.40 over five years at its current annual rate. The unlimited-camera Smart Aware plan reaches $1,079.40 over the same period.
Eufy does not require a subscription for the S4’s local recording and core camera functions, so its mandatory five-year service cost is $0. Optional cloud backup and other paid services can increase that figure.
Those totals exclude hardware and assume current annual subscription prices remain unchanged for the full five years.
Which security camera should you buy?
The eufyCam S4 is the strongest overall choice if you want to avoid monthly fees. It costs more upfront, but local storage, solar charging, a fixed 4K overview, and separate tracking camera give it a strong feature set without requiring a cloud plan.
Choose the Nest Cam Outdoor if AI search, detailed notifications, and Google Home integration matter more than local storage or subscription cost.
The Arlo Pro 6 is the better option for battery-powered installation and polished alerts, but its best detection and history features sit behind a paid plan.
The Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Pro is easiest to justify in a home that already uses Ring devices. Its 4K image quality is strong, but recordings and many intelligent features depend on a subscription.
Whichever ecosystem you choose, compare the total cost rather than the camera price alone. Storage, AI detection, multi-camera coverage, and subscription fees can change the better buy over several years.
