Even powerful gaming PCs can stutter while compiling shaders. Nvidia’s latest graphics driver aims to reduce those interruptions, but the improvement won’t extend to every game.

GeForce Game Ready Driver 621.01, released October 21, adds support for Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) technology across Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards. The system delivers precompiled shaders with supported game downloads, reducing startup delays and potentially preventing shader-related interruptions during play.

Older RTX cards qualify alongside newer models. However, compatible hardware isn’t enough on its own: games must support ASD, and PCs must meet Microsoft’s software requirements.

RTX GPUs and games that support the new driver

Microsoft’s October 21 announcement confirms support for all RTX GPUs and RTX Spark devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, with Nvidia driver 621.01 or later.

That includes GeForce RTX 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-series cards. Older GTX models aren’t listed. Those considering an upgrade can compare the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 for differences in gaming performance, pricing, and power requirements.

The first confirmed games are Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Nvidia’s driver announcement confirms ASD support for both titles, with Modern Warfare 4 launching October 23 after campaign early access began October 16.

Microsoft says ASD cuts Modern Warfare 4’s initial shader preparation from several minutes to seconds on a typical PC. These are company-reported results, not independently verified benchmarks across different systems.

ASD also supports compatible AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm hardware, with separate driver requirements. The RTX 5070 Ti and Radeon RX 9070 XT comparison examines broader performance differences between competing graphics cards.

How shader delivery reduces stutter

Shaders help GPUs render lighting, textures, and visual effects. Compiling them for specific hardware can consume processing resources, delaying game launches or briefly interrupting gameplay.

ASD moves much of that work into the cloud. Developers prepare shader information for compilation across supported configurations, with the finished files delivered through participating distribution services. Microsoft’s technical documentation outlines the process.

Shader compilation is only one cause of gaming interruptions. Memory shortages and asset streaming can also affect performance, while Microsoft’s work to reduce Windows 11’s memory demands targets broader system responsiveness rather than shader stutter.

Nvidia also offers Auto Shader Compilation (ASC), introduced in April 2026. Unlike ASD, ASC rebuilds previously generated DirectX 12 shaders after driver updates, either while the PC is idle or on demand.

ASC requires driver 595.97 or newer and is disabled by default. Users can enable it under Graphics → Global Settings → Shader Cache in the Nvidia app, according to Nvidia’s ASC announcement. It cannot prepare shaders for a game that has never generated them.

For ASD, Microsoft advises installing the Xbox PC app before downloading a supported game. Modern Warfare 4 can display a “Precompiled shaders installed” message when the relevant files have been delivered.

Microsoft plans to expand ASD to Steam and the Epic Games Store, with Fortnite support expected in an upcoming update. Supported Steam purchases can already benefit through the Xbox PC app, according to Nvidia, but native storefront integration remains forthcoming.

With support now available across RTX generations, broader game adoption is the next hurdle. For now, the driver offers a targeted improvement in supported titles, not a universal fix for PC gaming stutter.
