While some are opting to use their cellphone GPS for directions, a hard core road tripper will probably want a dedicated unit. Garmin also has less expensive models than the sleek 3750 (which costs $349).

You can also read books on the Apple iPad, although it’s not as good in full sunlight as the Kindle. However, if you’re under an umbrella or inside then the iPad can do a lot more than just read books.
