Crazy computer mods

By Anthony Sullivan

I’m not sure what possesses a person to take a perfectly good computer and begin chopping, hacking, and otherwise affixing away at it in order to make it look like something other than a computer. Occasionally it turns out okay, though. Here are a few examples.

The first mod we’ve got takes all the guts of a computer and puts it in a completely clear case.

Add a few cathode neons and this thing looks like it might be called home to the mothership anytime now.

PSU mod

PSU mod

Here is a closer look at the PSU that has also been modded so you can see through the outside.

Pretty cool!

Hot-rod mouse

Hot-rod mouse

Not a computer but a peripheral. I don’t think this was a very practical mod, but still pretty cool looking.

Side panel

Side window panels are by far the most common mod and often can be purchased from the case manufacturer.

This fella did a good job of making the insides look nice though.

I like the rounded cables.

Side Panel... again.

Here is a nother shot of the same computer.

He added a hole for the fan you saw in the previous shot.

Water bottle mod?

Water bottle mod?

Not very practical, but odd for certain. This guy modded his computer so that it would fit inside what appears to be a large water bottle.

Another side panel... wrong side?

Another side panel... wrong side?

This one caught my eye because it appears that the window is on the wrong side. I’m not sure how they would have done this mod but it may just be a mirrored image.

Cool looking case all the same.

Cool cathodes

Cool cathodes

This guy loaded up his box with cold cathode lighting and it looks pretty sweet.

I wonder how much extra power those things draw.

Monitor mod?

Monitor mod?

Now here is something you don’t see every day. A window mod in a monitor.

Don’t try this at home kids. The capacitors inside a CRT monitor carry enough voltage to kill you even when they are turned off.

Bengals fan? No! It's the Cheat!

Bengals fan? No! It's the Cheat!

At first glance I thought this guy was a bengals fan. Being a bit of a bengals fan myself I was excited.

Imagine how much MORE excited I was to learn that this case is styled after the character ‘The Cheat’ from the Strong Bad internet series!

BURNINATED!

What good is a case that is styled after The Cheat without a case that is styled after Strongbad?

Water cooled! Cool!

Water cooled! Cool!

This computer runs so fast that it needs an active water cooling system in order to function properly.

Well it’s probably not that fast but in an abundance of caution this guy decided to do it anyway.

Same computer, different angle.

Check out those hoses!

Window mod on top.

Window mod on top.

Not the most exciting mod ever for certain. This person did a great job on the window mods though, and I really like the mod on top.

Sweet layout

Sweet layout

This is just an awesome looking layout that he’s done. It might be good for airflow or it might be for looks, but this guy sure spent some time laying all this out.

I probably should have warned you, but from here on out the mods are pretty strange.

Starting us off is the hairiest mod I’ve ever seen.

There are two words you probably never thought you’d hear in the same sentence. Coffin and computer.

Judging by the hose you can see in the cross shaped window on top, I’d say this computer is water cooled.

Here is one last look at this very strange computer mod.

I am pretty sure that if you tried to take this through security at an airport, you’d be arrested.

Ammo box mod

Ammo box mod

This guy biult his computer into an ammo box. Again, probably not something you want to take on a plane.

I think they frown on items that look like dirty bombs.

Spaceship mod

Spaceship mod

It looks more like a toy spaceship sitting on top of a computer.

I’ll go ahead and assume that the ship is an essential part.

Bloody Mayhem!

Bloody Mayhem!

I initially liked this shot of the designs cut into the shuttle computer case pictured.

But on second glance I noticed the awesome paint job on the computer behind it.

Gas can mod

Gas can mod

Probably my favorite of the bunch, this computer is built entirely inside of a gas can.

Hopefully there isn’t any fuel in there.

Flying saucer

Flying saucer

This one is a little better done than the previous space ship mod. I like that the computer is actually inside the ship.

The ship does kind of look like an Asian wok though.
