Apple Computer took the stage Tuesday at an event it teased with the phrase “It’s Showtime.” At San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, CEO Steve Jobs touted some of the company’s newest products, including a new video iPod, a tiny Shuffle, a box called “iTV” and version 7 of iTunes, geared to allow movie downloads.rn
This little box connects a Mac or PC to your TV or home-theater system over a wireless network. It allows you to download movies from iTunes to play on your TV. It’s code-named iTV, and it’s coming in early 2007.
The iTV allows users to view a range of content from a Mac, including movies, music and photos.
The ports on the iTV include HDMI, for connecting to a high-definition television set, and digital audio output.
The iTV fills in the missing link between iTunes movie downloads and your wide-screen TV. It’s scheduled to sell for $299.
Jobs also introduced a new iPod Shuffle, calling it the world’s smallest MP3 player, “a fraction of the size of the first generation.” The 1GB gadget is priced at $79.
The new Shuffle is about the size of a pack of matches and includes a clip for attaching to clothing.
The dock for the tiny new Shuffle sends data into the music player through the headphone jack.
Apple is bringing back color choices for its new generation of iPod Nanos, which have more storage capacity than their older brothers.
The new Nano will come in three models–a 2GB version in silver only; a 4GB version in silver, blue, pink and green; and an 8GB version in black only.
The new video iPods have a 60 percent brighter picture, Apple said. They will also have a search feature that allows users to look up songs or videos by name.
Apple will be shipping games for the new video iPod, including the favorite of 21st century poker players, “Texas Hold ’em.” The devices will come in two models–a 30GB version for $249 and an 80GB for $349. “This is the lowest price for the iPod line and we’re very excited. It does video and a whole lot more,” Jobs said.
Besides the array of colors, the new Nanos have an aluminum case that is thinner than that of the previous generation.
