IBM claims its new iDataPlex servers will use 40 percent less energy and run 5 times faster than current models using the same space. Best of all, IBM says no air conditioning is required with its water-cooled version.rn
rnrnThe iDataPlex is made to order and comes in 22 flavors with a menu of networking, switch, storage and server options. This is the iDataPlex DX340 server.rnrn

For this new server, IBM created a design that turns the standard rack on its side.
The iDataPlex has a water cooling option that allows the server to run at room temperature without air conditioning. Thermal imaging shows the server without the liquid cooled door (top) and with it (below). Red indicates heat.
IBM thermal analysis show a “green” iDataPlex which has been optimized for efficiency.
