There have already been major car shows in Detroit, Chicago and Geneva this year, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a slew of new cars, concepts and hybrids at the New York International Auto Show.rnrnrn
First, the old news. Volkswagen announced that will begin mass producing Rabbits this summer. Volkswagen sold 1.3 million Rabbits over its original 10-year life span but sales of its successor Golf, introduced in 1984, were disappointing. The Golf brand is being replaced by the Rabbit.
Looking at cars isn’t the only thing that you can do at the New York Auto Show which officially opens its doors to the public on April 14 and runs until April 23. A member of the press tries out the Subaru driving simulator.
Nissan announced that the next generation GT-R performance car is going into production. It is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in Fall 2007, followed by the U.S. and Canada in Spring 2008.
Hybrid Technologies took showed off its HT Lithium Smart Car on morning television in the United States. The non-emission compact was ridden by Regis Philbin to the set in Thursday’s broadcast of LIVE with Regis and Kelly. The Lithium Smart Car will be available to consumers in a full lithium version by 2007.
CNET Review’s Wayne Cunningham reports from the Auto Show that Volvo has finally caught up with 21st century technology in their 2007 editions. The dash popup LCD has a rear-view camera, complete with animated parking lines, and navigation. Click here for more reports from the show.
Automaker ZAP is showing off its Brazilian Obvio 828, a concept car that runs on “trybrid” technology–gasoline, electricity, and alcohol. The energy friendly vehicle is designed with a three-passenger bench seat and an iMobile “car-puter” that runs on Windows, GPS navigation. ZAP does note that the car does not currently comply with regulatory requirements in California and four other states.
