Playstation Debugging Unit

Released in 1995, the Playstation Debugging Unit was compatible with game discs from any zone (PAL/NTSC/SECAM). It plays games on CDR, as Beta soft is on CDR. This station is used to find bugs in beta games, etc. The unit is similar to the 1001 series in format and board design. It also shares the early model PSX design flaw; poor laser quality.

European Developers PAL Playstation

This is the PAL version of the debugging Playstation. This PSX is identical to the other debuggers as it can play games from all zones and load CDRs (A CD with an executable file, without the PSX protection scheme). Video output however is PAL, programs (games) used on it must be for that video standard. A very pretty unit! Not to be confused with the PSX prototype which is also blue. The lasers in the early series were of poor quality.

Sony 10,000,000 contest Playstation

Given away to celebrate 10,000,000 playstations sold. These units are of a darker blue than the dev units, a special blue that is only found in this unit.

PSX VCD

Playstation 5903 VCD player. This psx plays video CDS. However it was intended for the PAL market and is a collectible even in Japan. VCD was all the rage a few years ago in asia. However, bootleg DVD has now taken it’s place. More of an greyish cream than pure white, it is an obscure offshoot on the playstation family tree.

Universal Sony Playstation model 3001

These crept out the door. They play NTSC and PAL games. I’ve been aware that this was almost identical to the Net-Yarouze! released by SONY. However, I was given the impression that this unit was sold by iteslf, and not in the Yarouze bundle. I was told this unit as a textured feel to it’s surface–“spikey”.

Sony Net Yaroze – SCPH-3001

Sony released the Yaroze (“let’s do it together” or “let’s work together” in Japanese) as a home development system for playstation enthusiasts. Support was done via a secure web site, with code freely exchanged between members of the Net Yaroze system. Several promising projects emerged from this bold experiment, most notable being Devil Dice (Xai). Unfortunantely, Sony neglected the Yaroze, and finally support was fully withdrawn.

Playstation Japanese Development Card Set

The current development hardware has been refined a lot since this cardset came out. Notice the special connectors on the Playstation controllers.

The reference materials… unlike nintendo materials, it’s not 3 feet thick. A nice overview of the early Playstation development environment.

Playstation 2 Test DTL-H30001

PS2 Test DTL-H30001 is a NTSC/UC debugging station. It is at 30001, but European. Further Understanding (Credit to Zilog Jones) “European developers to do localizations testing, as the majority of them do release their games in North America – hence the “U/C”. The majority of TV sets sold these days here are NTSC compatible, plus they can just use RGB anyway, so using one here wouldn’t be a problem”

What is also interesting is that it reads PS2 games (master discs and originals) in the correct region, hence a PAL game in PAL. It Also plays ALL PS1 games, regardless of what region in NTSC!
