  Gen AI is the one causing the most immediate power headaches. Gen AI use cases like ChatGPT might account for 75% of U.S. data center MWs (as a percentage of 2022 data center available power) by 2025, according to Morgan Stanley. By 2027, gen AI power usage will grow by 191% due to the popularity of gen AI as both business and consumer tools. To make matters worse, predicted power demand is being continually revised upward. The numbers given here might prove to be gross underestimates in six months.

  Ongoing efficiency and modernization efforts in data centers and across the power grid won’t keep pace. As a result, data center power consumption is predicted to grow from around 2% of U.S. electricity today to 7.5% by 2030, according to Boston Consulting.
