Clearly, employees are highly motivated to use AI in the workplace, regardless of their company’s official stance. That’s because many employees think that developing AI skills is necessary to secure their future jobs and increase their hiring potential. In fact, 76% of users say they need AI skills to remain competitive in the job market, according to a Microsoft survey. The majority (79%) also say AI skills will broaden their job opportunities, and 69% say AI can help get them promoted faster.

This employee outlook is in keeping with leadership’s attitude towards the importance of AI skills. In fact, two-thirds (66%) of leaders say they wouldn’t hire someone without any AI skills, and 71% of leaders admitted they’d prefer to hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills over a more experienced candidate without them. Early career workers may also gain a particular edge by adding AI skills, since 77% of leaders say junior candidates will be given greater responsibilities with AI.
