  4: SEC (publicly traded companies) and EDGAR

  In the U.S., companies that issue publicly traded stocks are governed by the Securities Act of 1933. In general, this act requires that public companies disclose financial and company information, so investors can make informed decisions.

  The Securities Act of 1933 is enforced by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Companies must file disclosures with the SEC. These disclosures are available on the SEC website through the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval system (known as EDGAR).

  Examples of such filings include an annual report form and a quarterly report form. The SEC offers a comprehensive list.
