According to various sources, Dell may introduce consumer PCs running both Windows and Linux together on the same hardware using virtualization.
Says Dell Chief Technology Officer Kevin Kettler:
Virtualization is very powerful. It’s an environment that would allow many different operating systems to coexist. You can interpret that however you would like.
With sufficient RAM, the potentials are enormous. For example, one virtual machine might be dedicated to surfing the Net, automatically reverting back to a default state when restarted. This would limit any security threats to the parameters of the virtual machine.
Another perhaps could be assigned to run Linux and a third to support Windows XP software that might not be otherwise compatible with the base Vista operating system.
At the moment, Dell is developing the machines with help from several partners, including SWsoft and EMC.
