Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in North Carolina to expand its cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure, marking one of the biggest investments in the state’s tech sector.
The new campus, planned for Richmond County, is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled specialized tech jobs including data center engineers, network specialists, security experts, and operations managers. In addition, Amazon’s project is expected to generate thousands of construction and supply chain jobs in the region.
Investing in a tech innovation hub
The announcement comes amid soaring demand for AI and cloud services, pushing tech giants like Amazon to expand their data center capabilities nationwide. North Carolina, which has already attracted major tech investments from companies like Apple, continues to strengthen its standing as a digital innovation hub.
Since entering the state in 2010, Amazon has invested $12 billion in North Carolina, generating $13 billion in GDP impact and employing 24,000 people across full-and-part-time roles. An additional 26,000 jobs have been indirectly supported through its statewide operations.
“Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront of all that’s ahead as we continue to attract top technology companies like Amazon,” said North Carolina Governor Josh Stein in a statement.
Boosting local infrastructure and education
Amazon’s investment goes beyond expanding its data centers to include workforce training and community development. The company is partnering with local colleges and schools to provide:
- Data Center Technician Programs to train future operators.
- Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Workshops, helping workers gain skills for broadband expansion.
- STEM programs for K-12 students, including hands-on learning with industry-grade tools.
Amazon is also launching the Richmond County Community Fund, offering $150,000 in grants to support STEM education, sustainability, and regional economic development. Local groups will be eligible to apply for up to $10,000 per project.
Starting a new chapter for Richmond County
Richmond County, a rural area once reliant on textile manufacturing, stands to gain significantly from Amazon’s investment.
“This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, in the company’s announcement.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with Amazon aiming to enhance its cloud infrastructure amid growing demand for AI.
