ChatGPT Pro 500 vs. Pro 200: Is Astra Ultrafast Worth $300 More a Month?

ChatGPT Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast and more included usage, but whether it’s worth $300 more depends on how heavily you use Work and Codex.

ChatGPT’s fastest Astra tier now costs $500 a month.

Launched Sept. 29, Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex and carries the highest included usage of OpenAI’s Pro plans. Pro 200 stays at $200 a month, but OpenAI says included usage allowances are changing for affected subscribers.

For developers and other power users, the upgrade question is narrow: Does lower latency in Work and Codex save enough time to justify another $3,600 a year? Ultrafast is not a blanket speed boost for ordinary Chat.

Pro 500 adds Ultrafast and more included usage

OpenAI’s Sept. 29 release notes say Pro 500 is the only self-serve Pro plan with Ultrafast. Pro 200 users can still use GPT-6 Astra in supported experiences, so the higher tier primarily adds the faster service mode and more included usage. OpenAI Help Center

Users still getting oriented with Astra can see where GPT-6 Astra appears across ChatGPT and Work and how access differs by plan.

Feature Pro 200 Pro 500
Monthly price $200 $500
GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex Yes Yes
Astra Ultrafast No Yes
Included usage Lower than Pro 500; allowances are changing Highest among Pro plans
Purchased credits Available for eligible usage Available for eligible usage
Ultrafast after included allowance Not available Can draw from purchased credits

OpenAI says Ultrafast reaches up to eight times faster token generation in Codex, or about 300 tokens per second. Its Ultrafast announcement describes a token-generation speed increase, not a guarantee that an entire coding task will finish eight times faster.

The faster tier also consumes allowance more quickly. OpenAI’s current rate card says GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast uses included subscription allowance at eight times the Standard rate and, when paid with credits, costs six times the Standard GPT-6 Astra rate.

How we compared the plans

We compared current OpenAI pricing, model access, Ultrafast availability, included-usage rules, and credit behavior. We did not independently benchmark Pro 200 against Pro 500, so OpenAI’s “up to 8x” figure is treated as a vendor claim rather than a measured productivity gain.

The $300 premium hinges on Work and Codex use

Pro 500 makes the strongest case for people who spend substantial time in Codex or ChatGPT Work and can put a dollar value on waiting. A recent ChatGPT Work and Claude comparison shows how these systems now handle research, files, automation, and connected-app workflows where repeated latency can accumulate.

The same calculation applies to coding agents. Current Claude Code alternatives increasingly handle repository-level work, command execution, testing, and multi-step development rather than isolated code suggestions.

Pro 200 remains the cheaper option for users who need Astra but do not regularly run into Work or Codex latency or usage constraints. OpenAI has confirmed that Pro 200 is again open to new subscriptions at $200 a month and that included usage allowances are changing; affected users will receive additional details by email.

The practical test is workload-specific: track how often Pro 200 interrupts real work, how long representative Work and Codex jobs take, and whether the saved time is worth $300 a month. If latency is not already costing money or slowing delivery, Pro 500 is harder to justify.
