Google’s October 2026 Play updates bring video answers to Ask Play, 30-second gameplay recordings, easier video sharing, and new pairing options for smart glasses and wireless earbuds.

The changes appear in two releases dated Oct. 26: Google Play Store version 53.8 and Google Play Services version 26.42. They cover different parts of Android, and not every feature will necessarily appear on every phone immediately.

Five new Google Play features

The October system release notes identify three Play Store changes and two connectivity additions in Play Services.

1. Ask Play adds video answers with timestamps

Ask Play, Google’s AI assistant for discovering apps and games, can now include relevant videos with citations and timestamps in its responses.

That gives users another way to evaluate apps before installing them. Instead of relying only on written descriptions and reviews, they may be able to jump to a relevant part of a video.

Google previously introduced side-by-side app comparisons through Ask Play. The new release adds video references, but the notes do not explain how Google selects or verifies those sources.

2. Playbacks saves the last 30 seconds of gameplay

Playbacks is a recording feature inside Sidekick, Google’s in-game overlay.

It retroactively captures the previous 30 seconds of gameplay and stores the video locally. Players can save a moment after it happens rather than starting a recording beforehand.

Google had already introduced Playbacks on Oct. 13, when it said Sidekick was rolling out to select devices. Its inclusion in version 53.8 does not establish universal availability.

3. Play Shorts can be shared outside Android

Google Play Store 53.8 adds shareable links for Play Shorts.

Recipients can view the linked videos on Android devices, other platforms, or the web. That removes the requirement for viewers to use an Android phone simply to open shared content.

For developers, shareable videos create another route for potential users to encounter a game or app outside the Play Store.

4. Android XR glasses gain phone pairing support

Google Play Services 26.42 adds the ability to connect Android XR glasses to a phone.

The release notes do not identify compatible glasses, supported phones, or countries. Users should therefore avoid assuming the feature works with every Android XR device.

The update arrives as Google’s Android XR ecosystem expands beyond conventional smartphones into headsets and wearable displays.

5. Wireless earbuds can pair silently

The same Play Services release introduces background pairing for true wireless stereo earbuds without changing notifications, audio, or vibration.

The goal is a less disruptive connection experience. Google has not published a compatibility list identifying which earbuds support the behavior.

The update also improves Google One storage-management loading and the presentation of earthquake and crisis alerts.

How to check for the updates and what developers should know

Users can check their Play Store version by opening Google Play, tapping their profile picture, and selecting Settings > About. The Play Store version appears there, alongside an option to update the store.

For Google Play Services, open Settings > Apps > Google Play services to inspect the installed version. Menu names may differ between Android manufacturers.

Having the latest version does not guarantee immediate access to every feature. Google notes that some system-update capabilities are experimental or limited to particular users.

For developers, Ask Play’s video citations introduce another way for users to discover and evaluate apps. Google recommends keeping store listings current, maintaining useful screenshots and video previews, and checking deep links through Play Console.

Those steps also support Google’s broader changes to Android app distribution, although Google has not confirmed that listing videos directly determine which sources Ask Play cites.

Developers can also use Google’s Engage SDK to surface personalized app content across supported discovery experiences. Google’s October announcements describe these capabilities separately from the new Ask Play video results.

For organizations managing Android devices, the pairing changes warrant compatibility testing before deployment. IT teams should verify whether their supported phones, XR hardware, and earbuds actually expose the new options.

Google has not published a universal rollout schedule for Ask Play video citations or the two pairing features.

The immediate changes are clearer for users: Ask Play can provide video references, Playbacks can save recent gameplay on supported devices, and Play Shorts can reach viewers outside Android. The connectivity features will require more device-specific information before their practical reach becomes clear.
