Active Directory impact on Exchange 5.5

By RohilaMan ·
Hello,

Currently we are running Exchange Server 5.5 (sp4)(Exchange) on a Windows 2000 server (Win2K), which is then in turn working with the main Win2k. The main server is running Active Directory (AD), but not Organizational Units (OU). We wouldlike to move users and implement OU's, but have found little information on the impact that will have on Exchange as far as user accounts are concerned. Exchange is not running Active Directory Connector (ADC). Also, the most current user information is contained withing Exchanger and not AD.

Active Directory is a database of all of the users that is not compatible with Exchange 5.5. They work great on the same system but have no "contact between them" just as it was in the NT4 days. Exchange 2000 is compatible with Active Directory and they work together.
You can Migrate the Exchange 5.5 users to Exchange 2000 in an upgrade and then bring it into AD OU's but there is no way (known to me at least) to bring the Exchange 5.5 database into AD and OU's
So there will be no impact, either way.

There should be no impact on the end users. I have worked with large organizations that have upgrade to Windows 2000, implemented OU's and remained on Exchange 5.5. Exchange 5.5 does authenticate users but it is not an AD aware application. It merely looks for the user account in the domain not where that account may reside in an OU structure.
