HP Laser Jet 4 - Paper Jam

By coatesdf ·
I was given a HP LaserJet 4 and find that it will not feed paper properly?

It will not take paper from the Manual Tray and 19 out of 20 times first sheet from internal tray will jam just before it exits the machine(printer)????

Confused??

Most paper jams are caused by normal wear and tear of paper handling rollers. Over time, these rollers get shiny and slick causing misfeeds.

There may be a kit available for your particular model. Check on the HP site for availability for your particular model. (Is it a 4, 4M, 4si, etc.)

You could try cleaning the rollers with 75% (or less) rubbing alcohol -- or purchase a bottle of rubber renewal liquid at your local electronics/computer store ($5-10).

The HP LJ 4 is a good printer.

If it's jamming at the exit though, you will need to replace the fuser in all probability.

Very good responses so far. One thing: the early 4 had a marginal design for the upper roller assembly (where the paper feeds out at the exit) and HP had a replacement kit with an improved design that jams less. That could be part of the problem, if cleaning alone doesn't fix the jamming. Our HP dealer installed the kit as part of repairs on two of our printers, so I can't comment on how hard it is to get the kit or install it.

It doesn?t look that you need to change pickup rollers. You need to check:
1. Fuser unit ? check all gears for any broken, try to move them;
2. Paper delivery assembly ? if paper is stacked there or there is a broken gear ? it needs replacement;3. Gear with arm ? behind the fuser unit in the main motor train ? very often broken in old printers (over 300 000 pages).
