My System switches off itself randomly.

By ravikishore_g ·
I recently assembled my system. The following is its configuration
celeron 466,
intel 810chipset motherboard(mercury),
ATX cabinet etc.

I use the onboard AGP, and Sound card. I have installed windows98 (second edtion) as the OS. Every thing went on well for some time. Now the problem is that the system reboots randomly. Since it is an ATX cabinet the power is turned off automaticaly. It happens more while playing games or immediately afterwards. It even does not perform scandisk when i restart it.
I have tried reinstalling win98 without formatting. The system rebooted many times during the installation itself. I have also re-installed the display drivers. But nothing has worked. All the device drivers installed are appropriate. All the devices work fine when viewed through device manager and control panel.

I don't understand why it happens Can you help me solving this.
Thank you
sarat.

Sarat,

I have seen this problem on numerous ocassions and what always worked for me was replacing the power supply. When the power supply is faulty, the slightest fluctuation in the electrical current running to the power outlet that the computer is plugged into will cause a surge, thus a reboot. The reason for the problem when I had it was the central heat and air unit cutting on & off in my house. It would drop the voltage for a split second and my power supply didn't have enough strength to sustain the needed wattage, so the machine would reboot.

You should be able to get another one for under $50. I'm assuming that you purchased the tower separately, so the vendor should replace it.

In deference to answer #1, I do agree that could be a place to look. I would also check out the BIOS settings. You might try turning off ACPI settings, since these often cause problems. Since you say that upon restart, WIN98 doesn't do an automaticScandisk, you may have a corrupt installation.

The above answers are the usual problems, but there is a few others. Don't remember where I read it, but Intel announced that some motherboards with the 8xx chipset where faulty, and would cause random faults. After trying the above solutions, callyour vendor and see if it is one of the boards/chipset that was recalled from intel.
Another solution, is make sure EVERYTHING is plugged in TIGHT and correct. This also holds true for ALL cards, cpu, and ALL connectors (power, ide, scsi, WOL).
Ihad a slot1 celeron that wasn't inserted all the way and would reboot whenever the case was slightly touched. Also check to see if you have a Wake On Lan cable, this has caused many of random faults for me. So try anything and everything that plugs in.
Try formating the drive and do a complete install of win98 SE. (almost the last resort)
After reading it closer, it could sound like a heat related issue. Check your temperatures. Check them from a complete cold start, then once after the computer is at idle wi

never enough space, oh well. just try your temps on all components. (vid card, 810 chip, hardrive, cpu, and so on.)
hope these help.

The first thing you should check is the cpu fan. If that's not working then the cpu gets too hot and all sorts of funky **** will happen
