    100 % cpu utilization

    Locked

    by eclaybaugh ·

I have 3 netware 6 sp3 servers that occassionly will stay at 100% utilization. Usually i get a op-lock code before this happens. Connections start to drop, applications hang etc.. Workstations are win9x, winxp, win2k. Sometime i can close the hung application and it will recover the cpu. Appears that the workstation has closed file but server still shows file open. Othertimes I have to control esc to down server and this doesnt work so i have to pwr dwn/up.

How often does this take place? Check for a possible virus around your servers with an antivurus software. Otherwise, maybe you need more memory for your servers since memory utilization usually goes up when there aren’t enough resources to serve the user requests, applications, printers, etc. Hope this helps.

The only CPU utilization issues I’ve seen with NW6/Sp3 were NDS related. Run DSREPAIR on all the servers, and double check that comm betwen them is not failing and causing trouble.

You mention that you’ve seen a message concerning op-locks. Have you tinkered with the op-lock settings?

How about disabling client-side file caching from the server?

When a server pegs the CPU, does monitor / system resources provide any insight to where the cycles are going?

I have ran virus scan on all servers and no virus. we also run inoculan continous virus scan on server. Memory has been upgraded. I just disabled client side caching on (10/10)and now just waiting to see what servers do.
