16- bit DOS subsystem in Win XP

By tomg14 ·
I am trying to install some applications and recieve the error "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program you are trying to start or install C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system is not sutible for running MS-DOS and MS windows applications. Choose close to terminate this program"
I have tried to use the fix on the MS web site and am still having the problem, does anyone know a solution. I am running Win XP Pro in NTFS.

Your AUTOEXEC.NT located in the SYSTEM32 directory should look somewhat like this:
(the last 4 lines are not pertinent if you are not networked)

REM AUTOEXEC.BAT is not used to initialize the MS-DOS environment.
REM AUTOEXEC.NT is used to initialize the MS-DOS environment unless a
REM different startup file is specified in an application's PIF.

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir

REM Install DPMI support
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx
REM Install network redirector

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\nw16

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\vwipxspx

%SystemRoot%\system32\vipx.exe
%SystemRoot%\system32\vlmsup.exe
